Success begins with
Clarity. Concept. Strategy.

Success does not begin with execution, but with clarity. We analyse markets, define potential and develop well-founded concepts as the strategic foundation for sustainable positioning, economic viability and international competitiveness in the premium segment.

Market and competitive analyses. Location and infrastructure analysis. Demand potential. Strategic feasibility studies.

The story began in the 13th century (1238), when the Sint-Elisabeth Hospital with its adjoining monastery was founded on land outside the city walls of Antwerp. From the very beginning, the site was not a traditional religious refuge but a place of care, healing and compassion, run by religious communities following the Rule of St. Augustine.

A central element of the site’s historical identity is the monastic apothecary, closely linked to the development of medicinal botany.

  • In the 16th century, the renowned apothecary and botanist Peeter van Coudenberghe established a medicinal herb garden next to the hospital.
  • This garden is considered the origin of today’s Botanical Garden of Antwerp.
  • Monks and apothecaries used the plants to produce remedies, ointments and tinctures for the hospital.

The past shapes the future. The identity of this place lies in its history. What was once a quiet monastery becomes the foundation of a distinctive positioning in the international luxury segment. Not as a retrospective, but as a strategic foundation: heritage becomes a defining differentiator, giving the destination its unique depth, authenticity and radiance.

Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp does not use its history as decoration, but as a strategic foundation. The core of the positioning:

Monastery = Origin of tranquility & spirituality

Hospital = Origin of healing & care

Apothecary = Origin of knowledge & botanical medicine

Botanical Garden = Origin of nature & research

From this emerged a luxury destination rooted in healing, nature and historical authenticity.

About Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp

The 5-star superior member of Leading Hotels of the World, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, was realised with remarkable innovative spirit, sustainable eco-design and great attention to detail. The historic setting draws on centuries-old botanical knowledge and takes visitors on a journey through 14 unique worlds of experience across 20,000sqm. Across five historic buildings, 108 rooms and suites each tell their own story – not only through the revived historic architecture, exceptional interior design and concierge and butler service, but also through carefully curated artworks that add to the uniqueness of the destination. The evocative building names already hint at their distinctive character: Sint-Joris, Monasterium, Sint-Elisabeth, Alnetum and Filips Van Marnix Huis. The holistic concept based on Traditional European Medicine is reflected throughout the Sanctuary – from the amenities in the rooms and suites to culinary specials in the restaurants and Henry’s Bar, as well as the Saint Charles Store located in the historic monastery pharmacy.

Five fine-dining restaurants celebrate the culinary excellence of Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, led by the spectacular comeback of Hertog Jan. Fine Fleur, Bar Bulot, Restaurant 1238 and Het Gebaar all offer authentic gastronomic experiences. Henry’s Bar, dedicated to the botanist Henri Ferdinand Van Heurck, embodies a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. A variety of impressive event locations, including the 15th-century monastery chapel and the Botanic Congress Centre with 14 individual meeting rooms, are further highlights of the destination. Hidden within the depths of the Sanctuary lies another secret: The Unprecedented, a VIP and members-only Scotch whisky investors’ club. For lovers of art and culture, the Granada Gallery, curated by Jochen Leën, connects the world of art with Antwerp’s identity as the City of Diamonds.

“Our botanical vision and mission is to revive the ancient knowledge of monastic medicine and carry it into the future through modern scientific insights. Back to nature and its origins. This renaissance is not only reflected in the sustainable architecture – botanical well-being is the heart of our destination and reaches its full expression in the holistic spa. We respond to the longing for the healing power of nature and the desire for holistic solutions. Here, in the heart of the diamond city of Antwerp, we combine the heritage of monastic medicine with modern phytotherapy and evidence-based preventive methods. With this unique concept, we have created an extraordinary connection. The award for Best City Spa 2023 recognises our principle of preservation and transformation for a sustainable way of living.” Marc Alofs, Managing Director, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp

Back to nature and its origins: the history of Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp dates back to the Middle Ages. The earliest records date to the 13th century, when the Sint-Elisabeth Hospital was relocated to this site. In the monastery built later, Augustinian monks experimented with medicinal plants they cultivated themselves. The legacy of the botanist and apothecary Peeter van Coudenberghe has been revived through the careful restoration of the historic monastery pharmacy in collaboration with Saint Charles. Today, the store offers around 400 Saint Charles and niche brands in the fields of natural cosmetics, aromatherapy and nutritional supplements. Special tasting areas further emphasise the exceptional experience at the heart of the Sanctuary.
