Plunhof demonstrates how a family-run traditional hotel can evolve into an internationally recognised spa destination through clear strategic development, thematic differentiation and consistent brand leadership. At the core of the transformation was the long-term development of a distinctive and unique product with emotional depth, economic sustainability and international appeal.
The development of Plunhof was based on a precise strategic core idea. The starting point was the analysis of the region’s DNA – the centuries-old mining history of Ridnaun, the Alpine natural landscape and the multigenerational host culture of the family. From this foundation, a clear positioning emerged: an Alpine spa refuge that translates heritage, nature and regeneration into a unique and sustainable experience.
From strategic spa consulting and market and target group analysis to the conceptual alignment of the product universe, a hospitality concept was created that clearly differentiates itself from the competition. The result: a credible luxury positioning with strong emotional resonance and sustainable market appeal.
With Spa Minera and Acqua Minera, one of the most consistent themed spa concepts in the Alpine region was created. The guiding motif of the mine was not treated as decorative design but as a fully integrated experiential principle. Materials, architecture, treatments and storytelling all draw on the region’s mining heritage and translate it into an immersive spa experience that flows throughout the entire hotel.
Elements such as the salt lake, grotto realm, tunnel sauna, silver steam boiler, fireplace and miner’s world form a spa system that combines authenticity with innovation. The later expansion with Acqua Minera added new water, relaxation and movement worlds with panoramic views and a direct connection to nature. Across approximately 4,000sqm, a spa offering emerged that intelligently combines experience, deep relaxation and regenerative wellbeing.
The communication strategy for Plunhof followed a clear principle: visibility through substance. The goal was to transform a strong product idea into an internationally relevant brand without losing the authentic family character of the hotel.
Our services included sharpening the brand communication, developing wording, storytelling, brand design and content architecture, as well as international press relations. Spa Minera and Acqua Minera were not communicated as spa facilities or treatments alone, but as independent experiential worlds with strong conceptual depth.
The magazine It’s my life, developed by our agency, marked the final major communication milestone of the collaboration. It translated the resort’s core values – tradition, transformation, health, nature and family culture – into a modern international brand narrative and positioned Plunhof as a progressive wellbeing destination with a clear future perspective.
Through targeted media relations, award strategies and market outreach in DACH, Italy and international key markets, Plunhof was sustainably established as a premium spa destination with strong emotional brand loyalty.
Plunhof combines strategic innovation with an exceptionally strong host DNA. The Volgger family has stood for authentic hospitality, personal connection and a deep commitment to quality for generations. This cultural substance became a central element of the brand development. The positioning as a Home of Generations was never meant as a marketing claim, but as a lived philosophy reflected in the product, service and communication.
Beyond the spa world, the resort offers South Tyrolean and Mediterranean cuisine, a wine list of around 700 labels, its own alpine hut and a year-round activity programme in the surrounding mountain landscape. The combination of family culture, experiential quality and clear differentiation creates exceptionally strong guest loyalty and sustainable international market strength.
