Stargazing Gastronomy
Hertog Jan | Gert de Mangeleer and Joachim Boudens | ** Michelin
Hertog Jan at Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp boasts an intimate setting with its own greenhouse, beehives and herb garden. The restaurant has a limited number of covers, and the focus is on omakase, a formal dining practise that gives chefs full creative freedom to select and prepare a sequence of inspirational dishes. This becomes a journey of at least three hours, reflecting the season and the chef’s inventiveness and experience.
Fine Fleur | Jacob Jan Boerma and Thomas Diepersloot | * Michelin
Pure indulgence is guaranteed, from the historically respectful interior to the stargazing cuisine of one of the world’s most exciting pairings of chefs. Glimpses of the kitchen offer a taste of things to come: craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail in a special, historic location. It’s a journey of flavours and experiences. Classic techniques are combined with fresh elements, acidity and herbs and spices from around the world.
Het Gebaar | Roger van Damme |
* Michelin
Het Gebaar | Roger van Damme | * Michelin
Open for lunch and dessert, Roger van Damme’s remarkable restaurant is housed in a fairy-tale ‘gingerbread house’ on the edge of the Botanic’s site. Het Gebaar’s fame rests on creative and innovative desserts, although savoury starters and mains are testament to the chef’s creativity – think cherry shrimp with notes of yuzu and jalapeño, followed perhaps by a mouth-watering Beef Wellington and, the pièce de resistance, a signature dessert.
1238 Restaurant
Named after the year of the monastery’s foundation, the 1238 Restaurant is set in a perfect location at the heart of Botanic. A modern conservatory provides an impeccable architectural foil for the Botanic’s historic building fabric. Light, timeless and stylish, dishes are based on the classic foundations of French and Belgian cuisine. The focus is on fresh, local ingredients prepared with understated finesse.
Henry’s Bar
It’s where you’ll find the height of style, a convivial atmosphere and a gloriously good drinks menu. Excellently located within the walls of the 13th century monastery, Henry’s takes its name from Henri-Ferdinand van Heurck, the 19th century botanist and director of Antwerp’s Botanical Garden. It’s Antwerp’s definitive rendezvous for cocktails and canapés offering a healthy dose of flair and panache – Botanic style.
Bar Bulot | Hertog Jan
Part of the Hertog Jan Restaurant Group and the sister restaurant to Michelin-starred Bar Bulot in Bruges has been sensitively integrated into the ancient grounds. Chic, intimate and welcoming, Bar Bulot adds its classic blue and white hues and laid-back metropolitan vibe to the Botanic’s historic ambiance. Chef Koen Gussenhoven offers a contemporary spin on French and Belgian classics. It’s the very best of Belgian brasserie cuisine.

Botanic Health Spa Culture
Claudia Reichenberger’s expertise and experience were key in creating this groundbreaking back to the roots concept that encompasses health, beauty and holistic wellbeing. The Botanical Garden and monastic heritage were integral in defining the Botanic Health Spa culture – a future-oriented health concept that reflects a healthy approach to life … from root to fruit. This is reflected in the treatment menu that was developed in close collaboration with the Botanic’s Health Spa team, including Xavier Le Clef, TCM and acupuncture expert:
Customised journeys include 2, 5 and 14-day programmes designed to de-stress, heal and beautify.

Botanic’s Saint Charles Store
The Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp is as proud of its heritage as a monastery, as it is of the historic role played here by Peeter van Coudenberghe, Antwerp’s famous botanist and pharmacist. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the hospital’s historic apothecary was brought back to life. The 16th century pharmacy now houses the Botanic’s new concept store with the original Victorian cabinets and fittings, albeit beautifully refurbished. Combining Europe’s traditional healing wisdom with contemporary insights, the Botanic joined forces with Saint Charles – a Viennese company whose vision chimed with theirs – and, indeed, ours. The store a perfect showcase for natural cosmetics, aromatherapy products and nutritional supplements, including products by Saint Charles and niche skincare brands used in the spa. The precious, mostly organic, products are attractively packaged in high-quality, sustainable materials to protect them. Nothing is superfluous, everything is pared down to its roots.
